The right grab rail depends on how support is used, where it is needed and what it can be securely fixed to. A convenient patch of wall is not enough to establish the right location.
Work out the movement that needs support
Explain whether the concern is entering the shower, rising from a toilet or moving between positions. Where balance, transfers or disability needs are involved, ask an occupational therapist to specify the support. Rail location should follow the person, not simply match another bathroom.
Check the wall before selecting the fixing
Tiles conceal the structure underneath. The installer needs to determine suitable support, avoid services and consider the effect of penetrations in wet areas. A rail may need backing or a different location rather than a stronger looking surface fixing.
Choose practical shape and finish
Discuss grip, reach, contrast and cleaning as well as appearance. Products that resemble towel rails are not necessarily designed to carry support loads. Ask for the product specification and confirmation that the proposed installation suits its intended use.
Coordinate rails with other bathroom work
During a larger renovation, planned reinforcement can be incorporated before wall linings and tiles are installed. Keep the rail positions on the agreed layout so they do not conflict with screens, taps or storage.
